Across the board
It means: including everyone or everything within a group.
Where did it come from?This idom was first used to mean 'encompassing all aspects' by bookmakers to mark up the odds in races. An 'across the board' wager is one in which equal amounts are bet on the same contestant to win (first), place (second) or show (third). It's been used figuratively since the mid-1900s
When should we use it? As a adjective/noun modifier it is mostly found very close to a noun.
Examples of use:
Pay cuts have been made across the board. Meaning: everyone has had their pay reduced.
Over night stocks rose across the board. Meaning: stocks rose for all companies.
Across-the-board restrictions, which limit the activity of foreign investors in all service sectors in a country, are clear EU targets. Meaning: the EU aims to limit all foreign investors' activity within a country.
